Overlooking the beautiful Te Wahapu Bay, surrounded by the native New Zealand bush, promising hours of sun and an unspoiled sea view, the Bay Cottage is the place to relax on a holiday. You will forget time as you sleep late into the day. The cottage also has a stereo and television to relax in front of a cosy open fireplace. And, when you wake up after a soothing sleep you can enjoy an outdoor breakfast on the sheltered, spacious deck. Lap up the sunshine if you so desire. This is the best nature can give.
The day can be full of surprises. A dinghy and fishing tackle is ready for you if you want to try hooking a large snapper. You can enjoy a “Kiwi barby” with the New Zealands traditional Watties tomatoe sauce, if you are lucky with the catch. If sport is not what you are looking for, then you can head to Russell, just a short drive, with its variety of restaurants and cafes.
The flat land opposite the Bay Cottage is said to have been a parade ground of the garrison of soldiers that was based here during the first settlements. Te Wahapu bay was also the site of a boat building industry. A walk along historic Te Wahapu Bay is very relaxing and enjoyable, gathering pipis, mussels and oysters. The water at the bay is very clean, safe, sheltered from the wind and great for a swim.
The Norfolk Pine grove nearby is a famous landmark – new trunks re-grew from the base of the pines that were cut down in the late 1800's to be made into a spar for a visiting ship. At low tide, a walk will take you to the Tore Tore Island, site of a Maori pa, where the earthworks are still visible.
